Well I cannot make any major claims to success at a not so Glorious Goodwood so far (it hasn’t been easy), but at least I saw the light and limited my stakes accordingly and today is another day – we shall see.
Naturally I will stick with Goodwood (the best racing is so much more fun to try and second guess), and I think I have a couple of fighters to at least have on our side even if they cannot come with any kind of guarantee. The opener at 2.05pm should be enough to see off most on course punters as they look to solve a conundrum of a race over six furlongs and with 28 runners declared overnight. Historically, a low draw seems to be an advantage but I suspect being near the early pace is even more so, and this year the two look likely to tie up. I was lucky enough to spend some time chatting with trainer Tom Keddy at Lingfield a couple of years back and since then I have followed his horses with interest – trust me, he is a better trainer than he is given credit for, and in Piscean he has a sprinter who can be pretty decent on his day. He could finish anywhere between first and last to be fairer, but a look back though his form gives me a list of reasons to back him here, starting with a draw in the three stall which I feel could still be a positive. He has own over course and over the distance which is another tick in a box (it is a strange old track so a course win is a really good thing), and when he did so, all be it back in 2009, he won by two lengths (his most dominant victory of ten), and of a rating four pounds higher than he carries today, so as you can hopefully see, I am not expecting him to do anything he hasn’t proved capable of before!
For a more sensible bet (well, maybe), I suggest unlucky Oaks loser The Fugue should be able to turn around Epsom form with Was and take the Nassau Stakes at 3.15pm if she has the early pace to lay up with the pace setters dropping back to this mile and a quarter. With stable jockey William Buick presumably choosing Izzi Top ahead of the three year old she should be a decent price, and in Richard Hughes she has a jockey who treats his rides slightly differently, and he may be able to kid her in to giving her best this afternoon after disappointing at Ascot and my though is, the drop back in trip may well be the key to getting the best out of her.
