I am happy to acknowledge that I fully expect to struggle at the bigger meetings as they are, by definition super competitive with the best horses available in attendance, but this year I am struggling by my high standards and hoping for some big priced winners to keep me in profit.
Two horses have caught my eye this afternoon but as they both run in ultra difficult heats, I will limit my potential losses with small bets and keep my fingers and toes tightly crossed. With Trade Commissioner now out of the 3.10pm my main bet has been dashed but you would have to think that Prince Of Johanne could go close despite the burden of top weight. To say the six year old has had a good season would be a bit of an understatement after he finished second to the well handicapped Fury at York before winning the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot by half a length, the pinnacle of the career of any handicapper. His next run saw him stepped up to Listed class but a lack of tactical pace plus the problem of being checked when coming with a run and this rider dropping his whip, saw him beaten in to fifth but not really disgraced. His weight will be an anchor here but jockey Darren Egan reduces it by five pounds and if he gets the breaks he ought to go pretty close?
Looking for another bet I find myself strangely drawn to the Godolphin yard once again and the classy filly Gamilati who takes in the 4.50pm after aborting all thoughts of the 1000 Guineas. A top two year old who took the Cherry Hinton Stakes as a two year old before failing badly at York in the Lowther Stakes, she returned at Meydan in Dubai when taking their 1000 Guineas trial, and followed that up with victory in the UAE 1000 Guineas proper by a long way, but something must have been wrong to have kept her off the track for so long since? Bottom line is, if she is 100% she will prove hard to beat, if not then anything else can happen, but with the stable a bit hit and miss this season we could get a good enough price to make the risk worthwhile!
