A winner and an out with the washing wasn’t a bad way to round off a difficult Goodwood meeting but I am sorry (though anything but surprised) to announce to you that the early racing this week is not exactly up to that standard but the best horses cannot race every day and the sponsors cannot afford the prize money either.
Once again I cannot find the proverbial good things we always search for (and who rarely live up to the billing either, with the glaringly obvious exception of the legendary Frankel), but I do have a couple of outsiders who may be worth a point for fun and who should pay decent dividends if either or both should fluke a win?
My first dodgy bet sees the Mark Johnston trained Universal make his handicap debut over ten furlongs or so in the 3.15pm at Ripon where all eyes will be on the penalty carrying Gala Casino Star. After three runs over inadequate trips as a two year old, this sort of distance should see a massive improvement as a son of Dubawi and in receipt of just over a stone from the expected favourite, all is not lost! Add the unbelievable recent form of the yard and Silvestre De Sousa in the saddle and he looks worthy of a point if nothing else, and although I won’t be tipping him each way, he is priced accordingly if that is what floats your boat.
This evening at Wolverhampton I will stick with the same stable when Piper’s Lass has her second visit to a racecourse in the maiden at 7.20pm though the drop back in trip is a concern, I confess. A daughter of Singspiel, she is mote bred for middle distance next season and was introduced when fourth over seven furlongs at Lingfield (unlucky in running but was in front at the furlong pole), and if she comes on for that run (stable were not in the same kind of form back then), then she looks to have every chance to me with the Sir Michael Stoute trained Contradict her obvious main rival.
