Firstly, my apologies for the embarrassment of selecting such an odds on shot yesterday afternoon – I do deliberately write my articles before any odds are available so I am not influenced either way but even I would never knowingly have an eight to one on shot in my portfolio but I will still claim a winner is a winner!
This evening looks a bit better than this afternoon to me at the moment and I do have a couple of bets I will be having, though this time they can be placed after work – no need to rush out in a lunch break today.
Sandown is the venue for my first bet when Ed Dunlop sends multiple winner Khubala for the five-furlong handicap at 6.30pm when the three year old will look for win number four this season. Backward as a two year old, he only had the one run when last for five at Kempton but was then put away for the winter and has been a different proposition with an extra winter under his belt. His run of successes started with a maiden at Lingfield and have also included a handicap at Leicester (off a rating of 72) and more recently he scored at Doncaster off of 77. Put up a further seven pounds tonight, this is his first try at the minimum trip but with the soft ground and stiff uphill finish here likely to bring his stamina in to play, he may yet improve enough to score again though I am wary of Isola Verde who is said to be a lot better than we all saw last time out at Newmarket.
Those who have been politely mentioning how little I cover the jump racing at this time of year are in for a pleasant surprise, though it won’t happen very often, I am an old fashioned type and this is flat season in my eyes! That said, I am quite sweet on the chances of point-to-point winner Foundry Square who looks to have been found a very winnable race by trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies and his staff. Nigel is, shall we say, a little eccentric on occasions but has always been very welcoming to me and the rest of the racing media, and deserves every winner he gets, and this six year old should add to his tally in a maiden hurdle that really shouldn’t take too much winning and even a repeat of his runner up to Sir Benfro in a Newton Abbot bumper should be more than enough to take this tonight.
