I really hate to appear negative about the sport I love so much, but I do wonder if the Epsom Derby has lost a little of it’s gloss with the likes of Frankie Dettori and Richard Hughes riding elsewhere this afternoon? Camelot looks likely to win the big race for favourite backers but his odds are too poor for me to go for I am sorry to say, a remark that also applies to St Nichols Abbey who ought to take the Coronation Cup at 2.40pm, but again at a prohibitive price. One bet on the card will do for me when Jeremy Noseda sends the lightly race Grandeur for the opener at 1.35pm and despite an unfavourable draw in the 13 stall (of 13 runners!), he is still very lightly raced and perhaps open to a lot more improvement than the majority of his more seasoned rivals. Last time out he seemed to appreciate the step up to ten furlongs when pulverising a decent enough field at Goodwood a week ago and if he is as fresh and well as I am told, then a follow up is very much on the cards.
For my other bet I am off north to Haydock where if we wait patiently until the 5.15pm we could have a bet worth having in the shape of Heeraat, a son of Dark Angel who is thought of as a top quality sprinter of the future but who rather blotted his copybook last time out when only third at Newmarket. The market may tell us a story from that day as he was allowed to start as the 10/1 joint fifth favourite when his juvenile form suggested he had the best chance of them all, a sign to me that he needed the run and will be a different proposition here. If that is the case then the forecast odds of 5/1 look pretty generous, and hopefully worthy of a small interest?
