Horse Racing Tips – 19 June 2012 – Ascot

I wait close to a year each and every season for Royal Ascot before running round like a child on Christmas morning – it really is that good, that exciting, and that important in the racing calendar. This year is a very special year with both of the top rated horses in the World due to compete (not against each other), in the shape of Frankel (Tuesday) and Black Caviar (Saturday), and although they both should win, their prices make them virtually unbackable for those of us playing with normal stakes.

For me, I will wait for the 3.05pm at Ascot this afternoon when Aussie sprinter Ortensia will attempt to steal the limelight from compatriot Black Caviar, however briefly, with success in the Kings Stand Stakes. She has now won her last three races at Flemington, Ascot (the Australian version), and when bolting up last time out in the Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan to take the £387,000 plus first prize. She has won on both good to soft and soft ground so I have no worries on that score, while a fast run five furlongs looked ideal when she was last seen, and I am more concerned about her draw in the five stall. She seems to be best coming from off the pace which could create traffic problems here but if she is as good as she seems her jockey needs to find a way round that thorny issue and fast.

Never one for wasting my time when I don’t need to, my other bet here runs in the very next race at 3.45pm and I am hoping for a sport of value about Fencing for the John Gosden yard. After finishing sixth in the 2000 Guineas behind Camelot and Co, he was stepped up in trip to a mile and a quarter in the Dante Stakes at York where he was cruising with a quarter of a mile to go but failed to get home and is thus dropped back to a mile here. Forecast at 12/1, the fact is he finished a long way in front of favourite Power at Newmarket, and there is no evidence that suggests that will be reversed, making him excellent value with Frankie Dettori in the saddle at his favourite track.
