Horse Racing Tips – 5 May 2012 – Goodwood and Newmarket

Twelve months ago today I was sat in the Newmarket press room awaiting the 2000 Guineas blissfully unaware of the way Frankel would take his field apart, remain unbeaten all season, and go down in many peoples minds as the greatest racehorse the word has ever seen. Sadly, I doubt anything of anywhere near to that calibre will be on show today apart from Frankel himself in a pre racing racecourse gallop), though with the soft going we could well see some massive winning distances regardless.

Headquarters (Newmarket) do put on an intriguing card, but intriguing and profitable do not necessarily go hand in hand, and my job is to tell you about the racing and try to find you some winners as well. One horse does stand out in quality sprinter Margot Did, the winner of the Nunthorpe Stakes at York last season, and a sprinter whose record on soft ground reads two from two which has to be a positive.  She may have failed in Dubai when only eighth of fifteen in her warm up race and then tenth of fifteen in the Al Quoz sprint, but then plenty of horses fail to handle the track at Meydan. Back on home soil and on ground with plenty of cut in it, she should find conditions ideal and at a sensible price has to be worthy of a point at least?

For the main bet today we need to head off to Goodwood, a venue where Sir Henry Cecil does well on Guineas day if my memory serves me right. I once had a double when Band won at 4/11 for Major Hern and Sir Henry had a newcomer that bolted up at 10/1 for a lovely little double that paid for a few drinks all round I can tell you – happy days even if they were a long time ago now.  This time it looks like Vita Nova is the one to be on, though I admit the price could be less than I would like. She is a decent filly and to be honest I am surprised she remains in training as a five year old but all good for us punters as the obviously think she can improve up to Listed or probably Group class before being retired to the breeding paddocks.  She seems to handle any going (has won on soft and good to firm), and always looked a bit unfurnished to me last season so I expect her to improve again in 2012 starting with the 2.15pm in Sussex this afternoon, which looks to be hers for the taking. The mile and a half trip and soft ground look perfection but I am aware of the oddities of this undulating track, so will not quite ramp things up to a maximum four-point bet today.
