Horse Racing Tips – Thursday 12 April – Kempton and Lingfield

A strange old day in the world of racing yesterday (Tuesday) with the more than slightly embarrassing overturning of the ban on jockey Kirsty Milczarek who has been “warned off” for two years but can now ride from today onwards as far as I can tell? I have no opinion on the case and insufficient lawyers if I did but racing has shot itself in the foot once again and should never have enforced or tried to enforce such a punishment if it wasn’t totally waterproof.

On a more positive note, Champion Hurdler Rock On Ruby will be seen in the Aintree hurdle on Saturday which must be good news for racing fans everywhere, though he does look to have scared off most of the opposition with only six rivals due to take him on, while stunning Arkle winner Sprinter Sacre will be in action in the novice chase so this year’s Grand National Day card is already looking as top class as you could possibly hope for.

At Lingfield this afternoon Sir Michael Stoute sends decent three year old maiden Commend and stable jockey Ryan Moore for the mile and a quarter maiden and he should at least give the stable a good line for their other maidens of which there are literally dozens. To be quite straight, the yard had a terrible season in 2011 so the fact that this son of Pivotal did not win first time out when fourth at Yarmouth was no great surprise.  He will have learnt a lot from that run and should be a half decent price this afternoon, worthy of a small bet at the very least.

The best bet on paper today (though sadly, they don’t run on paper) has to be the Charlie Hills trained Basseterre who returns to the track in the mile handicap at Kempton tonight, due off at 8.00pm.  A son of Cape Cross, he is bred to get better with age and won his maiden with any amount in hand after a slow start at Lingfield back in January. He holds entries in both the Dante Stakes and the Epsom Derby which may well be tilting at windmills, but he must have been showing connections plenty on the gallops to justify such lofty aspirations in which case a Class 4 handicap off a mark of 77 ought to be little more than an exercise canter!
