Tomorrow sees the Grand National trial at Haydock and whilst as usual, there are many contenders that are entered in the Aintree race, it is unusual for horses that run well here to go close in the big race itself. Silver By Nature, Lucinda Russell’s grey, winner of this race for the last two seasons is absent and the top of the market has the horses that were first and second in Welsh National at Chepstow. That race was run on really heavy ground and I think it might pay to look elsewhere with the going forecast as soft tomorrow.
The race I think could be the key is the Warwick Betfred £50 Free Bet Classic Chase won by Hey Big Spender. Second that day was Fredo for Ian Williams, but a slightly unlucky horse was David Pipe’s Son Sasta. The good-to-soft ground was possibly a little quick and he also got cut-up when making a run on the home turn. In the circumstances he did well to finish in sixth beaten only 12 lengths. Having been dropped a couple of pounds in the weights and with 3lbs claimer Conor O’Farrell taking the ride, despite being 4lbs out of the handicap he is effectively off the same mark as Warwick. At 17.00 he should be backed each-way in the Haydock 15:20 with Bet Victor. With top weights having a great record in this race, three wins in the last in the last nine runnings, it is also worth a saving bet on Neptune Collonges at 11.00 with Boylesports.
The other big race tomorrow is Grade 1 Betfair 20£ in Free bets! Ascot Chase, in which several Cheltenham bound horses look to make a significant mark. Whilst chances can be made for three or four of the runners, I think it could pay to side with the favourite Riverside Theatre. The Nicky Henderson trained 8-y-o looks top draw on his day and having a great record when running after a break (has four wins from four after breaks of six months or more) can win on his season reapperance. Riverside Theatre should be backed at 3.25 with William Hill 25£ Free bet with code F25 to win the Ascot 15:00.
