Horse Racing Tips – Tuesday 21 February – Southwell and Taunton

The winners keep on coming with a 5/1 shot yesterday, so all my loyal followers (?) should have bulging wallets or purses ready to go to war at Cheltenham next month.

The racing this afternoon looks a bit tricky so I will not be risking too much/giving too much back to our bookmaker friends (they are not the enemy as some claim – we couldn’t place a bet without them), though you would hope that with three meetings I might be able to find something lol?

I will be at Taunton tomorrow afternoon, weather permitting, after a morning spent at the David Pipe yard so fingers crossed he gives me loads of winners I can pass on for the Festival. With Paul Nicholls cancelling our media day on Wednesday it is crystal clear we are better off avoiding his runners for the moment in which case I will be backing Giordano Bruno in the opener at 2.00pm for Philip Hobbs and jockey Richard Johnson.  He was a top class bumper horse and hurdling prospect in 2009 when winning at Hereford and here at Taunton before a perfectly respectable third to Sitting Tennant at Aintree in the Champion Bumper.  Hopes must have been high of future victories but something happened that I am not privy to (and will not phone up about and make enemies either), which kept him off the track from April 2009 to January this year when he tried his hand at hurdles, again here, when third to Darlan. The betting suggested he was badly in need of the run that day to blow away the cobwebs, and after tanking along near the head of affairs, it was no great surprise to see him swamped late on to finish a well beaten third, though hopefully he will not be so fired up this time? We have no real idea how much talent he retains but he is forecast around the 7/1 mark and looks worthy of a very small bet at least.

At Southwell, course winners need to be given an added pound or two with the surface so different to Kempton Lingfield or Wolverhampton, which seems to point to the chances of Bella Ophelia, who won as she pleased last time out here over course and distance. I am a big fan of trainer Hughie Morrison and as long as this daughter can get in front of Reve Du Jour and bowl along in front, she may prove very difficult to catch.
