I am pleased to report that the cold snap looks like it may finally be easing for a while at least and Folkestone are very hopeful a continued thaw will mean they can race this afternoon which ahs to be good news, much as I love the all-weather you can have too much of a good thing (?) and we are officially in the jumps season if memory serves?
In the hope they do get the go ahead, the first horse I will be backing will be Santo Thomas in the opener at 1.30pm, a Conditional Jockeys handicap full of talentless donkeys without a recent win between them! That may be a bit harsh I suppose, and if any owners are reading, my insincere apologies, but they are a motley crew and to be fair this race will not take a massive amount of winning. Young Harry Challoner is good value for his six pound claim which could yet make all the difference, while the two and a quarter miles looks just about perfect though if there is a negative then being put up nine pounds for a close up third at Bangor looks pretty harsh with the winner (giving away ten pounds) was only rated 93, so you tell me how that maths works out lol?
For the dodgy but potentially rewarding NAP, how about decent hurdler but long time absentee Qaspal in the novice chase at 2.00pm? Trained by the excellent Philip Hobbs, the son of Subotica won three hurdle races on the bounce in 2010 including the Imperial Cup at Sandown but he has either had an operation or training issues as we have only seen him once since, leaving a gap of 333 days since he last graced a race track. That said, if he can jump fences gen he is the best horse in this race, and this is hardly the most testing contest to start off his new career in and if he is as good as I hope then this is his for the taking, possibly in little more than a racecourse gallop.
