Horse Racing Tips – Saturday 18 February – Ascot and Haydock

Cracking racing yesterday has left me all excited and even more wound up about the Cheltenham prospects of Sprinter Sacre whose praises I have been singing since his hurdling days but then I was told by Nicky Henderson they thought he would be even better over fences and that looks likely to prove the understatement of the decade after he broke the course record on good to soft ground, and quite frankly without even coming out of a hack canter. While others look for reasons to knock him or his form, I just love seeing something special and connections must now be agonising whether to go for the Arkle first or straight to the Champion Chase without wasting a year in between?

On to matters much closer at hand and Ascot put on the best card this afternoon in my eyes, though Haydock run tem a short head second and I have to watch I do not upset either clerk of the course with my comments. Sadly I do not think Balder Succes is anything to do with my receding hairline but he is a decent and more importantly unbeaten hurdler who looks to make it win number four in the 4.10pm for trainer Alan King and ever popular jockey “Choc” Thornton. Already a course and distance winner last time out on similar going he is not being asked to do a lot more here even if it is against better opposition, but if he is to head to the Triumph Hurdle as hoped, he needs to win this and hopefully do so impressively.

Giving Haydock a look in (to keep people sweet lol), I keep coming back to the unbeaten Meister Eckhart, an expensive Irish import now with Rebecca Curtis, and surely overpriced at the predicted 10/1? When it is described as soft at Haydock it can get pretty testing and as he ahs already won on heavy ground at Ffos Las when running on well over two and a half miles, a slog over this three miles could be right up his street and at the price, a small risk is surely the sensible option?
