All change in the world of flat racing this week with Silvestre De Sousa backing up Frankie Dettori at Godolphin, and Champion jockey Paul Hanagan now announced as retained jockey to Hamdan Al Maktoum upon the retirement of Richard Hills and I am trying to work out just what that may mean when it comes to the next jockeys title? Fact is the top two from last season now have higher profile roles that may well mean a lot less rides (if more prize money), and may even be considered out of the running, while Ryan Moore is still tied to Sir Michael Stoute, who had a lousy season in 2011 and could be in for a lean time in 2012 unless he has a precocious bunch of two year olds? That all leads to Kieren Fallon having a great chance of regaining the title he last held in 2003, and at 9/2 I will risk a couple of points from our recent profits on a long range speculation.
Looking at the racing this afternoon and Sandown looks worthy of a visit especially if the sun keeps on shining, and a couple of winners would round it off rather nicely. AS a big fan of Nicky Henderson (I am off to his yard next week), I keep an extra careful eye on all his runners and I am pretty certain we are yet to see the very best of novice chaser Bellvano. He was part of the winning team that raided Kelso just after the snow and ice stopped so comes here fully fit and tuned up and I just cannot see him losing the 3.35pm unless he falls or jumps badly.
Another trainer I have a lot of time for is Henry Daly and bottom weight could suit Inga Bird in the three-mile handicap chase at 4.40pm. Still a relatively young seven year old (in chasing terms), he has won both his completed chases this year (fell at Warwick when held), and with so little experience behind him as room to go on from here. The yard seem in reasonable form despite few runners of late and as there is a mere twelve pounds between top and bottom weight this handicap has a wide-open look about it.
