January continues to be a very good month for my racing selections with another good winner at Plumpton yesterday. So feeling my luck is in, I’ve selected a couple of long-price selections for the final day of the month.
At first sight, selecting Divertmenti for the 15:30 at Southwell seems a crazy decision! However, on closer analysis a case can be made for Roy Bowring’s 8-y-o, who was winning on the turf only a few months ago off a 6lbs higher mark. Since then his form has been indifferent, hence his odds today, but with the fitting of a visor instead of blinkers for the first time, he could be worth a small each-way interest. One concern is whether he truly handles the unique surface at Southwell, but his staying on fifth here over two furlongs shorter a couple of runs back gives us hope. At 41.00 with Stan James £150 Free Bet Divertimenti is worth a small-each way bet today.
Having horses with a trainer makes you more aware of their general form and I have to say Charlie Mann’s lack of winners has been a concern. However, his recent runners have gone well with form figures that read 2122 and I’m hopeful that the good form can continue today with the return of Magic Prospect after a mini-break. There is reason to think he may prefer better ground, but his fourth place two runs back on good-to-soft highlights he can go on this ground. He is under the same claiming jockey today Gavin Sheehan, who takes off 10lbs and I think he has a decent each-way chance. Magic Prospect should be backed each-way at 13.00 with best odds guaranteed firm William Hill.
