Thursday 19th January – Learning a lesson

In my four month review I concluded with some lessons learned, well I will apply one of them today and then break the same one!  Have I gone mad?  I hope not, the lesson was about not racking up multiple losses on the same horse.  Mallusk has been recommended on these pages three times in the last month, but I will not make it a fourth today.  He runs in the 15:00 at Lingfield but if in-form trainer Venetia Williams lets Niceonefrankie run three days after completing a double, Mallusk may have to settle for second place again.

However, at Taunton there is a horse I want to support again, that horse is Colin Tizzard’s Third Intention. I tipped the horse in the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham and he ran a better race than his finishing position of seventh indicates, he actually lead at the last before weakening up the hill.  Dropped in class today he carries top-weight but races off the same handicap mark and I think he will be tough to beat.  Colin told us this morning that “Third Intention is coming back after a bit of a setback just before Christmas when he pulled a muscle near his groin. He’s fit and well now and in good nick at home. He could win this but he has a lot of weight to carry and I think a place is more realistic.”

The horse is already attracting money this morning and should be backed to win at 5.50 with a Best Odds Guaranteed firm such as Bet365.

It is not often you see a hot trainers list with neither Paul Nicholls or Nicky Henderson on it, but that is the case at the moment. Other leading jumps trainers such as Philip Hobbs and Nigel Twiston-Davies have appeared on it recently and I look for the latter to provide us with a nice price winner today.  He runs six but the one I am siding with is What An Oscar in the 14:10 at Ludlow.  This 7-y-o has been a little hit and miss, but has won two of his last four starts and should benefit from a step up in trip today.  Interestingly Jason Maguire rides and I am hoping he might get more of a tune out of the horse than Nigel’s son Willie managed last time out at Taunton.  What An Oscar should be backed to win at 13.00 also with a Best Odds company such as William Hill.
