Saturday 14th January – Decoy to be the real thing

Tomorrow sees jump racing at Kempton, Warwick and Wetherby, with the feature race being the William Hill 25£ Free bet with code F25 Lanzarote Hurdle at the first named track.  This used to be a 2 mile event but increased to it’s current distance of 2 miles 5 furlongs in 2007.  The race has been dominated by younger horses and you have to go back to 1988 to find a winner that was more than seven years old.

One older horse that maybe able to get involved tomorrow is Lightning Strike, the 9-y-o did the business for us last Sunday.  If Venetia Williams decides to run him under a penalty he wil be worth an interest.  However, my selection ahead of final declarations is David Pipe’s Decoy.  Decoy is a 6-y-o who showed improved form when stepped up to this trip at Cheltenham in November winning a conditional jockey’s event much easier than the final winning margin.  He than returned to the minimum trip a week later without penalty, but was denied by Featherbed Lane.  That horse has been successful since and reopposes tomorrow, all be it on much worse terms.  I take Decoy to show his liking for the longer trip and give David Pipe the first leg of what I hope is an across the card double, at 8.00 with Bet365.

The feature event at Warwick is the Betfred £50 Free Bet Classic Chase and Pipe runs both Sona Sasta and Faasel.  It is the longer priced Faasal that I like the look of and off a nice racing weight he is good each-way value.  Faasal has not won since November 2008 but has run with credit several times, including when finishing second at the Festival in the Kim Muir in its last two runnings.  Both of those runs came after a break and this is his first run of the season, the give in the ground should not inconvenience him.  Faasal should be backed each-way at 12.00 with Paddy Power 50£ in Free bets! and together in a small each-way double with Decoy with Bet365.
