Monday 30th January – Ladies to the Fore at Plumpton

A touch of seconditus at the weekend, with both Tidal Bay and Shakalakaboomboom finding one too good in the big races at Cheltenham and Doncaster respectively.  I will try and go one better today as I recommend following the ladies at this afternoon’s Plumpton meeting.

The two trainers in question are Lucy Wadham and Lawney Hill and both have been amongst the winners in the past couple of weeks.  Wadham’s Songsmith runs in the 15:50 Handicap Hurdle and looks to improve upon two fourth place finishes in his four runs to date.  This is first time in a handicap and his recent fourth of 15 at Huntingdon does not look bad form. Songsmith seems to be an improving type and I think Ladbrokes 50£ in Free bets! are too long at 10.00, I will recommend a one point win, but with my recent record I will not blame anyone that wants to back him each-way at those odds.

Thirty minutes later I hope it is the turn of Lawney Hill to strike for the fairer sex. She runs Dunlough Bay in the National Hunt Flat race that concludes the card at the East Sussex track. This 6-y-o gelding ran well on his debut for Hill finishing ahead of some fancied types from the Jonjo O’Neill and Alan King yards. It is likely that he will have to improve to take this race today, the main danger looking to be  David Pipe’s Bamboleo.  However,  at 5.50 with Bet365 200£ Free bets! Dunlogh Bay seems good value for the 16:20 at Plumpton.

My colleague Sean has also recommended bets at Plumpton today, and it will be interesting to see what Brendan Powell senior thinks of Bring It On Home’s chances.  Brendan told us this morning “Bring It On Home stayed and jumped well to win at Fontwell, has run well on the flat since and a repeat performance should see him run a very big race with help from the blinkers and the jockey!  The jockey of course is his son, although Charlie Mann also had a positive word for his runner in the same race, telling us “Don’t be put off by Tarquinius’ form figures, yes I know they are P, P ,P but he really is better than that. The handicapper has, for once, been really kind and dropped him 15lbs since his last run, so he is now 35lbs lower than when he was second at Bangor two years ago. He has taken longer to get fit than we thought, but is working better now and I think he has a really good each-way chance today.”  Maybe a reversed forecast is worth considering?
