Monday 16th January – One last chance before the January sales

Stepharlie, pictured after finishing fourth at Wolverhampton last year, returns to the course today in an attempt to win a race for the first time.  The Fromthestables.com Racing syndicate owned horse has been largely disappointing since a decent debut effort at Carlisle.  She holds an entry in the Doncaster sales later in the month and will have to show much improved form if she is not to be sold!

Having reviewed the race with Bryan Smart’s team, it does appear Stepharlie holds an each-way chance today and can be backed (only small stakes advised) at 17.00 with William Hill.  However, the detailed race review highlighted that the real value in the race might be Emma Jean.  She finished fourth behind Sweet Ovation at Chepstow in August over this 6 furlong trip, but has since raced over 5 and 7 furlongs.  Back to what looks her best trip and with a useful 3lbs taken off by Ryan Powell, this filly is worth a small each-way interest in the 14:55 at Wolverhampton at 23.00 with a best odd guaranteed firm such as William Hill.

At Plumpton, it could be worth a little interest in Colin Tizzard’s Wosayu in the 14:10.  Form figures of 6000-0 do not make pretty reading, but Colin thinks the horse has a better chance today than those figures imply.  Colin told our website members “Wosayu hasn’t shown much in Bumpers or hurdles so far but I think he is a nice young horse. We have found a nice little race following his come back run and has schooled well for the jumps and is off a very low mark. I actually think he should go very close and could well win.”  So jumping fences the first time and going left-handed, Colin’s comment to our website makes me think that 6.00 with Ladbrokes 50£ in Free bets! is worth taking.
