The weekend is over, the crowds have gone home, and some poor so and so is probably still walking around picking up a million thrown away betting slips from racecourses around the World. I am still shaking from the amazing performance of Igugu here in South Africa as she battled and refused to give in to somehow come from nowhere to win the big prize and enhance her paddock value even further. Even Mike Dee Kock looked almost emotional when I was chatting to him after the race as he admitted she was not 100% fit and he considered pulling her out of the race on Tuesday morning, but as he said, she is a true champion and god only knows how good she would be when in the best of health?
Personally, I am now winding down ahead of my trip home on Tuesday (I missed out on the Monday flights), and am not looking forward to our British weather – no wonder there are so many ex pats living out here or commuting for the winter lol!
Talking of winter (did you like the neat lead in there?), Plumpton would have been my venue of choice this afternoon where I would have liked to back Montbazon in then first, but odds on (1/10 forecast) is too short even for me. That leaves me with precious little to play with but it could be worth a small bet on winning point to pointer Firey King who makes his debut under rules in the novice hurdle at 2.10pm. At least Nicky Henderson has the sense to start him over two miles five furlongs (how many are started over two miles when three miles is standard for the pointing field?), and at £115,000 when last sold, connections must surely hope to recoup £2,669 here?
In the 2.45pm it could be worth a little risk on Bring It On Home for trainer Brendan Powell and jockey Brendan Powell (Junior), who is certajnly a name for the future and already looking like good value for the five pounds he can currently claim. His last run was little more than a pipe opener at Southwell on the flat (?) but he won well enough at Fontwell when last seen over fences and with stamina his strong point, the three and a quarter miles is something he should appreciate.
